The Stuff Dreams Are Made Of

Did you know that the world of ceramics can be so diverse and multifaceted? Find out everything about the basics of our unique ceramic products. From clay to porcelain, from sustainable raw materials in Portugal to differences in quality and resistance. We reveal the importance of these elements in our creative masterpieces.

volume

The sound makes the music, because as a living material it forms the basic structure of our unique ceramic world. This versatile raw material, consisting of clay minerals and natural oxides, is obtained in Portugal and in the immediate vicinity of our production site.

Its exact composition significantly influences its properties - from plasticity to heat resistance.

At Motel a Miio, we use high-quality, sustainably sourced clay to create works of art that are not only visually appealing, but also environmentally friendly and of the highest quality. This sustainable approach is an essential part of our philosophy.

Ceramics

Ceramics, a timeless craft, combine millennia-old traditions with modern innovations, creating a fascinatingly diverse world. The term “ceramic” comes from the ancient Greek word “keramos” and includes all products made from fired clay.

The production of ceramics is a multifaceted craft that combines various techniques such as hand building, pottery wheel turning and industrial production. The complex firing process in the kiln, in which temperatures vary depending on the area of application, is crucial for the quality and unique properties of the ceramic. This process divides the world of ceramics into different categories such as earthenware and sintered ware, each with their own charm and individual characteristics. From rustic stoneware that radiates coziness and warmth to elegant porcelain that embodies timeless elegance, ceramics offer countless design options for creative masterpieces. It is the basis of our unique tableware series and gives each piece a special touch.

Earthenware (earthenware)

Earthenware is a mixture of tradition and casualness. In this genus, which is fired below the sintering limit, beads such as stoneware or the characteristic terracotta can be found. It is fired at lower temperatures, which not only conserves resources but also makes the manufacturing process more cost-effective. At Motel a Miio we value stoneware for its particular plasticity and the high lime content, which makes it easier to work with. Although it is not quite as heat resistant as other types of ceramics, it still offers charming aesthetics and warmth in its products. Our stoneware items are carefully glazed and dishwasher safe to ensure they can withstand the demands of modern everyday life while retaining their unique appeal.

Stoneware (sinteredware)

Stoneware (sinteredware) - the queen of ceramics. Stoneware and porcelain come together in this category. The special highlight: They are fired at extremely high temperatures, beyond the 1150°C sintering limit, and even when unglazed they hardly absorb any water. This makes them extremely easy to care for, shock-resistant and durable. Visually, stoneware and earthenware are siblings in the ceramic universe, but they are fundamentally different. Light gray or delicate beige clay forms the basis of the stoneware, and colorful glazes give it character. It can be easily washed in the dishwasher and is therefore the perfect all-rounder for everyday use.

Glazes

Life is as colorful as you imagine it to be. That's why diversity shines in our colorful universe: colors that enrich life and make our ceramic art shine. Our products receive the finishing touches through masterful glazes. Working closely with our manufacturers, we use various techniques such as hand application, spraying or dipping to give each of our products a careful glaze.

But that's not all - we attach great importance to the highest standards when it comes to food safety. All of our glazes are subject to strict testing and meet the requirements of the European Food Safety Department. This means they are food safe and free from harmful substances such as cadmium and lead. Our glazes are not only aesthetically pleasing, but also safe and trustworthy.

Recycled glass

Our glass, a mix of sand and recycled glass, reflects our commitment to sustainability. We source our main raw materials from the picturesque landscapes of Portugal, which means we use local resources and minimize environmental impact. The glass is melted and shaped by skilled craftsmen at temperatures of 2500ºC. Through a meticulous process, each piece is inspected by an expert before a quality manager takes samples to ensure our products meet our high standards. This commitment guarantees that our customers receive not only beautiful but also environmentally friendly glass.

wax

Sustainability is our top priority. That's why we only use paraffin-free soy wax. This has the advantage that it is free of harmful substances such as paraffin and ensures a longer burning time with a gentle flame. Our candles are not only a feast for the eyes, but also good for you and the environment.

Our scented candles are not random products either, but rather the result of close collaboration with our suppliers. We rely on subtle, pleasant aromas that pamper your senses without being intrusive.
